Cambodian Human Rights Commission Celebrates 75th Human Rights Day

PHNOM PENH: The Cambodian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) organized a celebration of the 75th International Human Rights Day to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN in 1948.

With Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Country Representative Roueida El Hage present in the crowd, CHRC Chairman Keo Remy said that the Royal Government of Cambodia not only pays attention to human rights, but also to society, economy and culture to help solve people's hardships through social assistance programs.

He also mentioned Cambodia’s positive atmosphere for the LGBT community, saying that neither the government nor society restricts or punishes queer people. He noted that former PM Hun Sen made direct statements against discrimination towards the LGBT community.

Roueida El Hage said that the government’s celebration of Human Rights Day shows the attention to and promotion of human rights in Cambodia. She said that it is the duty of the state and the people to ensure the participation of human rights.

In a meeting with UN Special Rapporteur, Vitit Muntarbhorn on December 5, Keo Remy said that Cambodia is still committed to maintaining peace as its foundation to guarantee human rights, especially the right to life.
